People experience religion variously. In this course we will look at some of the different ways in which people engage with religious traditions, and the psychological functions of religion in their lives. Our guide to this subject will be William James, whose "Varieties of Religious Experience" has been a classic study of religion since it was first published in 1902. Along the way we will examine the processes by which people find meaning in their lives and how people use faith and reason to confront life’s dilemmas.
