Consumers are humans. A range of psychological processes influence their planning, purchase, use, and disposal of products and services. Insights into this psychology are crucial for understanding the consumption choices that people make as well as the development of effective consumer-focused interventions, from marketing strategies to public health campaigns. In this course, we will cover many of the basic social and cognitive processes that underlie consumer psychology, such as judgment and decision processes, attitude formation and change, reactions to persuasive communications, information processing, consumer-brand relationships, affect, motivation, and cultural and individual differences. We will also consider how these processes function through a review of the consumer behavior literature and examination of real-world examples.

Course Requirements:

During the semester, students will choose topics from a provided list and lead discussion based on articles from major consumer journals. Additionally, each student will present an empirical research proposal related to one of the topic areas in the course.
