Primary Instructor:

Designed for first year students, this seminar explores the different sounds and music we hear in film and media. It aims to sharpen students’ ability to notice music and sound and to assess the way their function and effects from a number of perspectives, e.g., industrial/economic, cultural. The seminar also aims to develop skills in critical thinking about the acoustic world around us.

Course Requirements:

The course features regular readings, examples to discuss, and robust in-class discussion.

Intended Audience:

First-year students. Students do not need to have a background in music or media studies.

Class Format:

The class meets twice weekly for informal lecture and discussion and includes a 2 to 2 1/2 screening session.
