New media emerge and are adopted by society at a dizzying rate, which makes the study of digital cultures exciting yet also quite challenging. This course re-introduces students to a world that may feel second nature to them by developing a critical-analytical toolkit for studying how our experiences of culture, aesthetics, communication, politics, and social life are deeply impacted by the digital. How should “digital” be defined, historicized, and analyzed? What debates are prompted by our routine, ordinary use of internet connectivity, digital platforms like YouTube, technological innovation like 3 and 4D animation, small screen entertainment, and mobile, ubiquitous media? This course surveys the breadth and depth of digital cultures by taking a closer look at issues that arise from the proliferation of film and TV on streaming services, gaming, activism and digital public spheres, and portable media like smartphones and tablets. Each week, students are introduced to a persistent theme in digital cultures and how to study it using methods in media studies. Topics include the digital turn in film, television, and radio, human-machine interaction, the self and self-improvement, user-generated content and labor, transnational flows and disjunctures, surveillance, the politics of search, hactivism, intellectual property, cloud computing and big data, productivity and apps culture.

Course Requirements:

Students will be assessed based on attendance and participation in section, on critical responses to course readings, on two exams, and a final paper or project.

Intended Audience:

Lower-level undergraduates interested in the critical study of digital media cultures who have not yet taken upper-level media courses. Because this class focuses on contemporary media and its impact on daily life, it will be broadly appealing to students from a range of departments. However, this is not an engineering, production, or technical programming course.

Class Format:

This course meets twice a week for 90-minute lectures plus a one-hour recitation section.
