Description

Could a computer have a mind or think like humans do? Could robots be conscious—could they feel or experience the world in the ways that we do? Could virtual assistants (like Siri) express individuality, assert freedom, or demonstrate creativity? To answer these questions, this course will investigate the relationship between the function of human minds and brains and the function of machine hardware and software. Students will study developments in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in tandem with theoretical frameworks in Cognitive Science, learning how advances in each field co-inform the other. In addition, we will examine the following ethical questions surrounding AI: What are our moral obligations (if any) to AI, and could AI have moral obligations with respect to humans? What are the ethical implications of our increased use of ‘intelligent’ machines in everyday life? How ought we approach the collection and use of our personal data by public and private entities? Should the use of machines to enhance human capacities be regulated? Using the interdisciplinary tools of Cognitive Science, students will critically engage practical and theoretical problems introduced by the evolving field of AI.
