Description

This General Chemistry course is intended to satisfy the one-term chemistry requirement for students interested in science, or as a natural science elective for non-science majors. This course may also be used as the first term in a four or more term chemistry sequence (probably CHEM 130, 210/211, 215/216, 260/241/242, etc.) for science majors and pre-professional students.

CHEM 130 provides an introduction to the major concepts of chemistry, including the microscopic picture of atomic and molecular structure, periodic trends in the chemical reactivity, the energetics of chemical reactions, and the nature of chemical equilibria. Students will be introduced to the fundamental principles of modern chemistry, the descriptive chemistry of the elements, and to the underlying theories that account for observed macroscopic behavior. In CHEM 130, students will learn to think critically, examine experimental data, and form generalizations about data as chemists do.

SECTION 100 — STUDENTS MUST ELECT DISCUSSION SECTION 101-121.

SECTION 200 — STUDENTS MUST ELECT DISCUSSION SECTION 201-223.

SECTION 300 — STUDENTS MUST ELECT SECTION 301-320.

SECTION 400 — Comprehensive Studies Program The intensive lecture section (Section 400) is intended for those students who would benefit from a smaller lecture section (maximum 100 students) and more lectures so that the pace is slower and there is more feedback. Permission of the CSP office is needed for enrollment in that section. STUDENTS MUST ELECT DISCUSSION 402-406.

SECTION 500 — STUDENTS MUST ELECT DISCUSSION 501-508.

Any questions regarding enrolling for this course should be directed to the Chemistry Student Services Office at chemundergrad@umich.edu.

CHEM 130 will require an online homework system and textbook; the homework and electronic textbook will be $65, when purchased directly from the publisher, and an optional loose-leaf print textbook will be available for $30. The textbook is "Chemistry: Structure and Properties", 2nd Edition, by Nivaldo J. Tro. (ISBN: 9780134553313)

Class Format:

Lectures will happen asynchronously; instructors will post video content according to the syllabus schedule for students to watch at their convenience. Discussions will meet synchronously via Zoom at the times scheduled on Wolverine Access. Discussion participation is optional. Exams and homework will be completed online.

Exams will take place online, via Canvas, and must be completed within a specific window of time on exam day.

Canvas will house lecture videos, discussion boards, practice quizzes, and exams. The online homework program is Mastering Chemistry, and students will need to purchase an access code (the least expensive option is to purchase this directly from the publisher). Discussion meetings and virtual office hours will take place using Zoom.

Students will need to purchase access to the online homework, which comes with digital access to the course textbook. The syllabus will provide more information about this when the course begins.
