What was it like to be a slave in ancient Greece or Rome? Where did ancient slaves come from and how were they enslaved? What tasks did slaves perform for their masters? How did masters control their slaves? Who was Spartacus and why did he rebel? How did the Greeks and Romans justify slavery?
In this course, we will explore the reality of slavery for both masters and slaves, as well as the relation of ancient slavery to modern forms of slavery.

Course requirements include quizzes and response papers as well as a midterm and final exam.
