"U.S. culture has a longstanding obsession with narratives of race and ethnic heritage. Racial & ethnic identity have been crucial factors in determining access to citizenship, education, economic opportunities, housing, expressions of gender & sexuality; in other words, every aspect of American life. Given that race is a social construct with no biological basis, the perpetuation of race's meaning and importance is an act constantly in the making. In this course, we will examine how the concept of race is shaped, changed, and challenged in American literature, primarily through the writings of African-American women writers."
