Description

From Socrates to cyborgs, we explore the human and non-human through classical and contemporary works of philosophy and various theories of consciousness. With the aim of exploring our own robotic nature, we will examine attention management, awareness thresholds, memory degradation, and temporal slippage in order to develop Westworld’s overarching conceit regarding our own compulsive and compulsory nature. This course seeks to examine what classic works have to say in the context of today’s challenging issues arising around new technology in order to discover both alternative accounts to the western tradition and to understand overlooked possibilities within it.

Course Requirements:

Students should have watched Season 1 of Westworld before the start of the course.

Intended Audience:

First and second year students in LSA Honors Program

Class Format:

As a DC (Distance due to COVID) course, all aspects of this course will be fully compatible with remote online learning. Both biweekly lecture and biweekly discussion sections will occur synchronously, but will be recorded for asynchronous participation when necessary. Since a large part of the course involves breakout work with your student team, however, we urge that you plan ahead so that you can participate synchronously when possible. Evaluation for this course will consist of asynchronous reading exercises, quizzes, and writing that culminates in a final team portfolio.

DISCUSSION SECTIONS 013 AND 017-As HC (Hybrid due to COVID) sections, these sections will hold some face-to-face meetings with students under safe conditions and only when all students and the instructor are asymptomatic and not under quarantine, according to a week-by-week determination. This course welcomes entirely online participation. While there will be optional in-person components, no part of this course requires you to be on campus or present in-person. Meetings will occur synchronously, but will be recorded for asynchronous participation when necessary. Since a large part of the course involves breakout work with your student team, however, we urge that you plan ahead so that you can participate synchronously when possible. Evaluation for this course will consist of asynchronous reading exercises, quizzes, and writing that culminates in a final team portfolio.
