Description

Background and Goals: This course is an alternative to Math 185 as an entry to the honors calculus sequence. The course stresses discovery as a vehicle for learning. This is an IBL course, where students will be required to work in groups and experiment in class. The course has two different aspects, namely class time (twice a week) and lab time (once a week). Grades will be based on worksheets, homework and class participation, with a strong emphasis on homework. Personal computers will be a valuable experimental tool in this course and students will be asked to learn to program in one of MATHEMATICA or SAGE. Moreover, for the write-up of the worksheets, the use of LaTeX is highly recommended, but not required.

For more information on this course, please visit the Department of Mathematics webpage

Course Requirements:

Students will be required to experiment throughout the course on a range of problems and will participate in each academic term in a group project.

Grades will be based on homework and projects with a strong emphasis on homework.
