Description

What are ghosts, and what are ghost stories good for? What do such stories propose it means for a person or a place to be “haunted”? What are the rules of this kind of storytelling, and how have they changed over time? What kinds of social, historical, or psychological crises or traumas do ghost stories help us explore? How do such stories challenge us to fine-tune our definitions of logic or evidence, or newly consider the boundary between perception and reality? Developing our ideas about literary hauntings (and the ways in which they tap into complex social and political issues) will serve as a foundation for cultivating and practicing the kind of sophisticated analysis and argumentation required in college-level writing.
Readings will include essential classics, such as Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House and Henry James’ Turn of the Screw, as well as less conventional ghostly masterpieces, such as Kazuo Ishiguro’s A Pale View of the Hills and Toni Morrison’s Beloved. The primary work of the course will be excellent preparation and active class participation, thoughtful attention to multiple writing assignments (essays, revisions, and related exercises), and a commitment to giving helpful feedback to your peers

Intended Audience:

This course welcomes entirely online participation. While there will be optional in-person components, no part of this course requires you to be on campus or present in-person.

Class Format:

Instruction Mode: As a "hybrid" course, we will attempt, if we can do so safely, to have very occasional in-person small-group meetings to support building classroom community and deepen our discussion of key course ideas and skills. However, because in-person meetings may carry risks and unpredictable challenges, all aspects of this course will be fully compatible with remote online learning.

Learning Mode: Biweekly course meetings will typically require synchronous participation. Some elements of the course, such as peer review and the occasional discussion thread, will be offered synchronously with the option to participate asynchronously.

Course Testing/Assessment: There are no tests in this class; assessment will be based primarily on your work on and improvement over a series of analytical essays, participation in developing our collective insights and working hypotheses about our key texts, participation in peer review, and related assignments.
