This course is a continuation of ASIANLAN 222. This course is to advance students’ communicative skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing, through the discussion of reading materials from textbooks and other authentic materials like newspapers, magazines, and audiovisual materials. The reading materials will be focused on socio-cultural, political, technological, medical, and other common issues and problems in Indonesia and around the world. With an emphasis on the analysis of selected texts (fiction and non-fiction), students are required to answer questions related to the texts or write a summary or response on the required readings for each session.

By the end of the semester, students will be able to: read passages from authentic materials like newspapers and magazines; listen and understand extended recordings, of news or movies in the Indonesian language; write responses to the reading and listening materials using advanced grammar and vocabulary; express and support their opinions; compare and contrast the issues discussed in class; make arguments to support their opinion as well as evaluating the materials and topics in depth.

Course Requirements:

The evaluation will be based on attendance and participation in class, weekly news reports, homework, weekly reading logs, and a final paper.

Intended Audience:

This class is intended for students who have passed ASIANLAN 222 with a grade C- or higher or those who have other equivalent Indonesian language training, as proven by the department’s placement test result.
