Description

This course provides an introduction to quantum mechanics and its application to chemistry. Topics covered include:

  • The principles of classical physics.
  • The mathematical tools of quantum mechanics.
  • The postulates of quantum mechanics
  • Free particle and a particle in a box.
  • Approximate methods (the variational principle and time-independent perturbation theory).
  • Time-dependent perturbation theory and spectroscopy.
  • The harmonic oscillator and molecular vibrations.
  • Orbital angular momentum and molecular rotations.
  • The Hydrogen atom.
  • Spin angular momentum.
  • Multi-electron atoms (atomic orbitals).
  • The chemical bond in diatomic molecules (molecular orbitals).
  • Chemical bonding in polyatomic molecules
