In this course we will survey some major issues in the interpretation of Plato’s Republic. We will read fairly substantial portions of the Greek text, from Books I, II,IV, V, VI, VII, and X, covering about 9 OCT pages per week.

We will study controversial questions by engaging in close reading of the original text and also by referencing secondary literature together with ancient interpreters. It is expected that students will develop a project that centers around an issue in the interpretation of the Republic or an ancient reading of the Republic. By “issues” I mean that we are called on to face such questions such as, what does Plato mean by the Form of the Good and what does he mean by calling it “beyond essence?” Why does the escaped philosopher return to the cave and to her former co-captives? Why does Socrates banish poetry entire in the tenth book of the Republic? What does Plato mean when he suggests that the Forms are of “what is” and what is “is” in that formulation? How do we read the Republic in the first place? As a political treatise?

Attention first and foremost is to comprehension of the text. To that end, there will be a midterm and a final based on the reading assigned. There will also be a paper and, if students elect to do so, we may develop a visual translation of the Republic in the form of handmade books.
