ASIANLAN 185 is a beginner’s course designed for students with little or no knowledge of Bengali. In this course, students will learn the alphabet, come to understand sound and script relationship, and learn and use basic vocabulary, phrases, and sentences. In this elementary course, students will practice all four skills — listening, speaking, reading, and writing — in order to be able to communicate at a basic level by exchanging, interpreting, and presenting the information. They will learn basic comprehension and communication skills on a limited set of topics and situations.
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Meet, greet, and introduce others and themselves in formal and informal settings
Ask and answer simple questions about date and place of birth, nationality, marital status, occupation
Give simple descriptions of familiar surroundings and daily life using rehearsed and memorized formulae and basic vocabulary
Make and understand simple requests, ask and tell the price and buy fruits/vegetables and classroom items
Express likes/dislikes and preferences
Understand and respond to simple exchanges about daily situations regarding self, family, friendship, home, addressing others using socially acceptable reference terms Course Requirements:

Intended Audience:
This course is designed for students who have less than the equivalent of one semester's study of Bengali at the University of Michigan.
