ASIANLAN 326 with B- or above or pass a placement test.

Primary Instructor:


This course provides an advanced, integrated study of speaking, listening, reading, writing, and culture with practical approaches towards using Japanese in professional environments. Course content includes current business news, job-hunting, Japanese business culture, and basics of Japanese honorific language and business emails. No prior knowledge of Japanese business is necessary.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Hold conversations and make presentations on selected business-related topics in a culturally appropriate manner.
  • Use basic formal expressions in various professional/business situations (e.g. greetings, job interviews, requests, expressing gratitude, apologies, etc.).
  • Use knowledge of Japan’s socio-cultural values to adapt linguistically and behaviorally in various social and work-related interactions.
  • Speak at an Advanced-low, or higher, level of proficiency as defined by the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview.

    Course Requirements:

    Attendance and Participation, Assignments, Quizzes, Exams, and Projects.

    Intended Audience:

    Undergraduates and graduate students who plan to work in Japan, or who work with Japanese people in their own countries and wish to increase their Japanese proficiency through business content. The class is not intended for native speakers who: 1) speak Japanese as a first language 2) completed their high school education at an institution where the language of instruction is Japanese only.
