This writing-intensive course is an introduction to performances presented around the University of Michigan, including concert music, theater, musical theater, opera, dance, and other performing arts. Students will develop critical skills in thinking and writing about performance, while also exploring various ideas about "liveness" in performance, considering what makes a “great” performance, and reflecting on the relationship between performance and social change. Further details about featured performances will be announced in August.
Course Requirements:
Attendance at all required performances; timely completion of weekly modules posted on Canvas; regular participation in Monday discussion sections; active involvement in peer writing workshops. To meet the LSA First-Year Writing Requirement, students will write a series of short response papers (2-3 pages) and develop two longer papers in multiple drafts: an argumentative essay and a final research project. No mid-term, no final exam.
Intended Audience:
Designed for first and second-year students, this course is open to undergraduates in all departments and programs in LSA, including the Honors Program and the Residential College, as well as other schools across campus, including Music, Theater and Dance, Art & Design, Engineering, etc. No performance experience required!
