This course introduces students to the theories and practice of English language teaching in the context of the local community, and provides them with hands-on teaching experiences in local service organizations. Participants explore the overall theme of “Language and Community" by building knowledge and awareness of ESL teaching and learning through readings discussing the history and ideologies of the teaching and learning of English as a second language in the United States.
Students assist in a local ESL classroom or tutoring program for 2-3 hours per week for a total of 20 hours during the academic term. Potential site placements include:
- Family Learning Institute
- English Language Institute
- Latinx academic tutoring organizations
- Ann Arbor Public Schools
