The history of the United States is a history of movement. From early Indigenous inhabitants to nineteenth-century immigrants bound for a mythic frontier west, from migrant farm workers to participants in the Great Migration, from Jack Kerouac hitting the road to contemporary van lifers, traversing the country has long been an American way of life. In this course, you will engage with a wide range of narratives—including short stories, creative essays, and films—in order to explore these simultaneously interconnected and distinct forms of mobility. You will practice engaging with these texts as readers, writers, and participants in a discussion community. Over the course of the semester, you will learn to create complex, analytic, well-supported arguments that matter in academic contexts.
