This class is about writing and academic inquiry, and in this section of Eng 124, we will specifically examine writing and composition from a selection of literary texts centered on the Caribbean and its diasporic communities. From essays to novels to short stories to visual media, we will examine topics like colonialism, imperialism, migration, nationalism, race, class, identity, and gender. Our class will explore these issues with writers such as Edwidge Danticat (Haiti), Fred D’Aguiar (Guyana), Jamaica Kincaid (Antigua), Ana Menéndez (Cuba), V.S. Naipaul (Trinidad), Rita Indiana (Dominican Republic), and others. In addition, students are encouraged to investigate topics of their own and in connections to the Caribbean.
