Description

In this section of English 223 we will experiment with writing in and across two genres, specifically short fiction and literary journalism/creative nonfiction. We might assume that what distinguishes each genre is its proximity to reality: Fiction is made up, while nonfiction tells a “true” story. But what is reality, anyway? How can our writing capture it—and should that be our goal at all? By studying the tools and strategies used by writers in both genres, and experimenting with them in our own writing, we’ll interrogate the boundaries between fiction and nonfiction, and consider how techniques common to one genre might be useful to our work in the other.

Throughout the semester we’ll read published work, generate material from both genres (in and out of class), revise one full-length piece, and respond to one another’s creative work. We’ll consider fundamentals of craft and the creative process, such as generating ideas, taking risks, giving and receiving editorial feedback, revising work, and participating in a creative community.

While this is an introduction and no previous experience with fiction or creative nonfiction is required, a genuine interest, a willingness to experiment, and a commitment to effort is expected. If you are primarily interested in other kinds of creative writing, like poetry, this section may not be an ideal fit for you.
