Description

In this course we will consider how external and internal forces have shaped the French language of today. We will study important steps in the evolution of French from late Latin to Modern French. Through the works of grammarians and authors who wrote about the French language, we will see how a sort of diglossia has developed between spoken and written French while taking into account cultural and socio-political shifts. We will end by looking at more recent changes to the French language heavily influenced by cultural phenomena throughout the Francophone world.
