Description

After taking this course, students will understand how to apply timeless dramatic principles to feature films, television shows, and new media by reading screenplays. Students will also clearly understand, through short creative writing exercises, how the elements of storytelling (characterization, point-of-view, subtext, symbolism, dramatic irony, etc.) translate to motion pictures in ways different from fiction and the stage.

Course Requirements:

Students will be assessed based on weekly screenplay analyses, in-class group writing exercises, two short original screenplays, and script coverage.

Intended Audience:

Undergraduates interested in careers in film, television, or other fields that require visual storytelling (marketing, social activism) will find this course useful.

Class Format:

Each week, the course will meet for two 1.5-hour sessions of lectures, in-class exercises, or discussion.
