This course analyzes the history of the United States to 1865, focusing on themes that have a continued resonance in contemporary American life and culture including the development and historical significance of race, religion, and immigration along with other themes. Students will read relevant primary source materials and will be expected to analyze these sources in light of the larger issues treated in the course. In addition, students will be exposed to major debates in American history and will be encouraged to form opinions and convictions on these issues. The course is interactive and includes sources from the lived experience of Americans. Assignments will be designed to encourage students to read, write, and think critically.
