This course analyzes the history of African-Americans to 1877. In 1619, Africans first set foot in a region that would later become part of the United States. That first landing of Africans preceded the arrival of the Pilgrims on Plymouth Rock. But if the Pilgrims are universally regarded as an important founding generation for the United States, the history and significance of African Americans is still hotly contested terrain. This course looks back on the early history of African Americans in an effort to chronicle the long history of race, slavery, and gender in the country. We will explore some of the major debates in African American history and students will be encouraged to form opinions and convictions on these major issues. The course is interactive and includes sources from the lived experience of African-Americans including songs, folktales, and visual culture.
