Description

This course explores the theory and practice of human rights. The evolution of that concept and dispute over its meaning are overarching themes. The course begins with an examination of the ancient origins of human rights in Buddhist, Abrahamic, and Greek thought and moves on to explore the conception of human rights which emerged in the western liberal tradition. Human rights arguments and activism from the left and right will be a focus, and topics include right wing populism; LGBTQ political action; environmentalism and water rights; abortion; and voting. Examples are drawn from U.S. and international contexts.
