The theme for this seminar is work. We will be examining the political ideas underlying different modes of workplace governance, the division of labor, the work ethic, critiques of contemporary work, post-work ideals, and institutions to support ideals of meaningful work and post-work. Questions to be explored include: What is it for labor to be free? What rights should workers have in the workplace? Should the workplace be governed democratically? What is meaningful work? Does the work ethic make sense if jobs get replaced by automation? Readings will draw from both historical and contemporary thinkers, and tie together philosophy, economics, sociology, and management theory.
