Description

Spanish 101 is a first-semester course intended for beginners with no prior experience in Spanish or for students that enter by their official placement exam score. In this course, students will abide by the flipped-classroom model, which consists of a student-centered classroom and implies that all instruction is delivered in the foreign language using a 4-skills approach. Students will complete grammar and vocabulary exercises through an online textbook platform at home so that they can use the class session to privilege interaction with their classmates focusing on meaningful, real-life situations and interactions, as well as heighten their cross-cultural awareness.

Assessment is based on attendance, course contribution, online homework, speaking and writing assignments, chapter exams, and a final examination.

After successfully completing Spanish 101, students will be able to

  • greet people
  • make introductions
  • count and spell
  • describe people and places
  • discuss university life
  • make travel plans
  • ask and answer simple questions in the present tense.

Students will also gain an appreciation of the cultures present in the Hispanic world and they will use critical thinking skills to talk about the differences and similarities among the world’s cultural traditions and social organizations.

For information about the sequence of Spanish language courses, please see the RLL Course Progress Chart.

Intended Audience:

Students with any prior experience that do not take the placement exam and self-enroll in Spanish 101 will be dropped from Spanish 101.

Students with any previous study or prior instruction in Spanish must take the placement test before enrolling.

Class Format:

Section 031 is reserved for CSP students. Need CSP department consent to register.
