The Sweetland Center for Writing aims to help writers become more confident, skilled, and knowledgeable about writing and the subjects they write about. Sweetland faculty and peer tutors supplement formal writing instruction in the Writing Workshop, Peer Tutoring Center, the Online Writing Lab (OWL), and the Synchronous Online Writing Lab (SyncOWL).

  • Writing Workshop is held in 1310 North Quad and offers free half-hour one-on-one sessions with University writing instructors for students who want feedback on their writing. Make an appointment online at www.lsa.umich.edu/sweetland.
  • Peer Tutoring Centers are located in G219 Angell Hall, 1136 Shapiro Undergraduate Library, 1059 Alice Lloyd Hall, and 2322 Bursley Hall where students can get writing help on a walk-in basis.
  • Students may also submit their writing electronically via Sweetland’s Online Writing Lab (OWL) where they will receive feedback on their writing within 72 hours or schedule an appointment in Sweetland’s Synchronous Online Writing Lab where they will receive online feedback electronically in real time. Visit sitemaker.umich.edu/sweetlandwritinghelp/home to submit your paper or schedule a SnycOWL session.

Sweetland Center for Writing Waitlist Policy

Students who want to be admitted to a closed WRITING course should add themselves to the waitlist. Once a seat is available, students will receive permission to register via email. Once class permission is granted, students will have 48 hours to register for the class. If students do not register within 48 hours, they lose their place on the waitlist and the next priority student will be issued permission to register.

Students are notified based upon a variety of criteria depending upon which class they have waitlisted.

  1. WRITING 100: Students waitlisted for WRITING 100 who have a higher number of credit hours and have not yet fulfilled their First-Year Writing Requirement, will be given priority. All other students will be notified based on their position on the waitlist.
  2. WRITING 400: Students waitlisted for WRITING 400 will be admitted based on class standing, with seniors given priority. Depending on the class topic, students on the waitlist may be given preference based on academic departments (i.e., students within a social science field may be admitted into the social science section over a student within a science field). All other students will be notified based on their position on the waitlist.
  3. Other WRITING Courses: Waitlisted students will be notified based upon their position on the waitlist.

Please note: It is department policy that students MUST attend the first two class meetings or notify the instructor that they will be absent. Failure to do so may result in the student being dropped from the course.
