Courses in Psychology

Undergraduate courses in psychology give students an opportunity to learn what research has shown about:
  • how behavior is motivated
  • how people perceive, learn, and think
  • how individuals differ from one another
  • how personality develops from infancy to maturity and is expressed by behavior
  • how interpersonal factors affect human relationships in the home, on the job, and in the community
  • how the brain generates normal and abnormal behavior
  • how animal models are used to study the brain mechanisms of behavioral disorders
  • how the brain develops and ages

The curriculum in psychology is intended to enhance one's understanding of behavioral science and of oneself and others in terms of concepts developed by study. To that end, we offer three concentrations: in Psychology; in Brain, Behavior and Cognitive Science; and in Neuroscience. To help you focus your studies around your particular set of interests, we offer ten Curriculum Guides (lists of recommended courses for students interested in a particular field of study).

Psychology Waitlist Procedure

All sections of all undergraduate courses have a waitlist (except courses that are “Instructor Consent,” First-Year Seminars, and Independent Studies). Being on a waitlist does not guarantee a spot in the class. The Department of Psychology will provide permission to register as seats become available in classes using the following guidelines:
  1. Upper level courses — seats will be offered to senior concentrators (85+ credits), then junior concentrators (55-84 credits), then sophomore concentrators (25-54 credits), then non-concentrators. BBCS and Neuroscience students will be given priority for BBCS/Neuroscience eligible courses.
  2. Breadth courses — seats will be offered first to concentrators by class rank, then all others in waitlist order.
  3. 100-200 level courses — waitlist order with freshmen and sophomore students receiving priority.

During Early Registration, permissions will expire 2 days from their assignment.

Students may add themselves to waitlists until the end of the day prior to the drop/add deadline.

After the first day of classes, contact the instructor of the enrollment section for information about registration. Further questions about enrollment and permission to register should be sent to psych.saa@umich.edu.

IT IS CRITICAL THAT STUDENTS ATTEND CLASSES FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE TERM. EVEN THOUGH STUDENTS ARE REGISTERED OFFICIALLY FOR A COURSE, THE DEPARTMENT MAY REQUEST THAT THEY BE DISENROLLED IF THEY DO NOT ATTEND INITIAL CLASSES.

All sections of courses meet from the first day of classes, even if the discussion or lab section is scheduled before the first lecture. Students must attend class from the beginning of the term or risk being dropped from the class.
