Participation in undergraduate research is a long-standing tradition in the Department of Chemistry, and is a great learning experience that will help to further develop your problem-solving skills, your laboratory techniques, and your communication skills.
Summer Undergraduate Research Program
Every summer, the department and a number of private and corporate partners provide summer undergraduate research fellowships.
- UM Department of Chemistry majors with freshman, sophomore or junior status
- Minimum 10-week full time research equivalent
- Participation in the program of activities associated with the REU program, including weekly seminars, field trips, final poster sessions.

Open to non-U-M students. Funded by the National Science Foundation since 1989, the University of Michigan Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site provides 10 weeks of full time research in one of the department's groups during the summer. The REU grant provides a stipend, travel and housing, as well as weekly seminars, field trips, and a final poster session with regional REU sites.
