GERMAN ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE: BETWEEN RAP AND RAMADAN

“Between Rap and Ramadan” brings a group of guest artists (film makers, musicians and dancers) who live in Germany to the University of Michigan September 25-30. The group includes documentary film-maker, Margarethe Mehring-Fuchs and artists (the composer, musicians and break dancers), who provide music for her films and give workshops in German schools designed to help students understand public culture and the role youth artists can play to address issues of xenophobia.  The artists are part of a group “Element 3” with whom Mehring-Fuchs works closely.  They have received several awards and praise for their film and their workshops in schools throughout Germany.

In addition to the events listed below, the artists will visit several University classes, thereby enhancing the curricula and providing opportunities for students to interact with non-dominant youth cultures from Europe for a sustained period, and bring discussion of important issues to a broader audience.
