Emily Joy Bembeneck is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Michigan in the Department of Classical Studies. She primarily works on narrative theory and character development in Greek epic and video games. Her dissertation entitled "The Princess Is In Another Castle: Multi-Linear Narrative in Ancient Epic and Video Games" studies the particular narrative structure and development common to the traditions of Greek epic and the co-authored story experiences of many modern video games. Other interests of hers include Greek tragedy, classical reception, myth & folktale, cultural and individual identity through play, and game-based learning. She is an active contributor at http://www.playthepast.org where she writes on the intersections of cultural identity, heritage, and video games. Aside from the dissertation, her current projects include working on metaphor in the player-avatar relationship and developing a game that investigates the notion of character in myth and fairytales.
