  Matt received a BA in Classics and Plan II from the University of Texas at Austin. His
  dissertation treats the ancient reception of Old Comedy, and he argues that the interpretations of its personal abuse and the ancient histories of Greek comedy were partly shaped by controversies about the nature of frank talk, corrective speech, and democracy. Beyond Old Comedy and the ancient scholarship on it, he is also interested in tragedy and the satyr play, Roman comedy and satire, and magic in the ancient Mediterranean. For his next major project, he plans to examine the construction of genre in antiquity, with a focus on the Greek dramatic genres.
