Modern Greek Lecturer I/III
The Department of Classical Studies in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan seeks qualified applicants for a full time Lecturer I or III position to begin September 1, 2010. This is a non-tenure track position, which we expect to initially offer for three years. Terms and conditions of employment for this Lecturer position may be subject to the provisions of a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the University of Michigan and the Lecturers’ Employee Organization. LEO Union website: www.leounion.org

Duties and responsibilities for this Lecturer I or III position include teaching Modern Greek language classes at elementary, intermediate, and advanced intermediate levels, and helping to create teaching materials to supplement those available. The Lecturer will assist with placing students in appropriate classes. To be qualified for the position as a Lecturer III, candidates should be ready to participate in student advising and engage with the broader work of the program, including liaison with the Hellenic Students Association and curriculum planning and development. A typical full-time (100% effort) load for a Lecturer in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is three courses per semester, or the equivalent in other duties.

Qualified candidates will have experience in teaching Modern Greek as a second language in a college or university environment and at least a M.A. or other advanced degree in a relevant discipline. Desirable qualifications include native or near native fluency in Greek, strong English skills, demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for in-class language instruction, expertise in second-language acquisition and ability to work effectively with the members of the Program. Experience with multi-media and computer-aided language teaching is also desirable.

Send letter of application, curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy and experience, evidence of teaching excellence, and three (3) letters of reference to the Modern Greek Search Committee, Department of Classical Studies, University of Michigan, 2160 Angell Hall, 435 S. State St., Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1003, or as a pdf to lsa-classics-search@umich.edu by December 1, 2009.

Greek Assistant /Associate Professor
The Department of Classical Studies at the University of Michigan expects to make an appointment in Greek literature at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor, starting in September 2010. We are particularly looking for someone whose research interests lie in later Greek literature—broadly defined—from the fourth century B.C.E. down to the Second Sophistic and the ancient novel, but we will seriously consider other candidates whose research interests do not duplicate those of the present faculty. We welcome applications both from traditional philologists and from scholars who apply contemporary interpretive methods to literature. While an interest in philosophy would be very welcome, we are not looking for a specialist in philosophy or history, but in literature.

Every faculty member normally teaches a mixture of language and classical civilization or Great Books courses each year. The person appointed will share in the teaching rotation for one of the large first-year lecture courses (either Classical Civilization or Great Books) taught every fall term, and also in the rotation for the graduate survey of Greek Literature (taught in alternate years). Other teaching responsibilities will include Greek courses, especially Hellenistic poetry and Greek literature of the Roman period, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Courses may also be organized around themes or genres. We hope that the candidate will also sometimes teach the required graduate course in Greek Prose Composition.

The Ph.D. must be completed by August 2009, but preference will be given to candidates whose dissertations are complete at the time of application. Please send a dossier including a letter of application, at least three letters of recommendation, current C.V., evidence of teaching experience, a statement of current and future research plans, a statement of teaching philosophy and experience, and a writing sample to the Greek Search Committee, Department of Classical Studies, University of Michigan, 2160 Angell Hall, 435 S. State St., Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1003, or in a pdf format to lsa-classics-search@umich.edu, by November 16, 2009. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. The University is supportive of the needs of dual career couples. The University of Michigan is an Equal Opportunity Affirmative Action employer.
