The Vision, The Value, The Difference![]() THE VISION Our mission is to study and to teach about the mass media: their impact, their uses by everyday people, their management by political and economic elites, their history, and their regulation and institutional structures. The mass media have become some of the most powerful institutions in American society and, indeed, the world. They affect every aspect of our lives, and thus, at Michigan, we emphasize four reasons for studying the mass media:

Our goal is to build on this momentum to have our department ranked as one of the top five in the United States. THE VALUE Our undergraduate program provides a broad-based liberal arts education in which we cultivate strong media literacy among our students. They learn about:
Our courses emphasize critical thinking to develop a portfolio of analytical skills that will benefit students throughout their lives in whatever careers they choose, including journalism, publishing, market research, public relations, television production, and advertising. In addition, the program prepares our students for graduate work in law, business, public policy and Ph.D. programs. THE DIFFERENCE We are especially interested in building research and teaching initiatives in international/global media and in the media and public health. To attain these goals, the Department must:
