    Openings for Faculty Positions

    Faculty Openings Beginning Fall 2009
    Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Communication Studies


    The University of Michigan, Department of Communication Studies seeks applicants for tenure track/tenured positions.  Expanding department emphasizes interdisciplinary study of the mass media and encourages applications from a broad range of methodological perspectives. We anticipate filling three positions, pending authorization.  Anticipated starting date for all positions is September 1, 2009.  All areas will be considered, with a special interest in the following areas:

     

    Political Communication, social scientist who studies media and politics, including the societal and individual effects of media on politics and public policy; the news media and politics; public opinion and civic engagement; interplay between polls, politicians and the media; political advertising; politics, race and the media; media and voter behavior; new media and political behavior.

     

    Race, Ethnicity and the Media,a social scientist who analyzes the representations of race and/or ethnicity in the news, entertainment media or new media, the effects of stereotypical representations on values and attitudes, race/ethnicity and politics/public policy, media uses by racial and ethnic groups, and minority media audiences.  We welcome applicants whose methods include experiments, survey methodology, quantitative content analysis and other social science techniques.

     

    Race, Ethnicity and the Media,media studies and/or critical race theory scholar who analyzes racial representations in the news, entertainment, advertising or new media, racial and ethnic stereotyping in the media, reception and meaning-making of media images by racial/ethnic groups; the history and evolution of racial/ethnic imagery in the media; minority media institutions and the creation of media for ethnically specific groups.  We welcome applicants whose methods include textual analysis, ethnography, in-depth interviewing, focus groups, and historical approaches.

     

    Applicants must identify the position and their primary area of interest as one of the three listed above or another area of specialization.  All applicants must send a vita, evidence of teaching excellence, a statement of teaching philosophy and experience and a statement of current and future research plans.  Junior applicants should send three letters of recommendation; senior applicants should send names of suggested reviewers.  Evaluation of completed applications will begin September 15, 2008; all applications must be received by October 15, 2008.  Some positions are pending authorization.
