Katie seeks to understand how the media facilitate and inhibit inter- and intra- cultural communication, focusing on prejudice. Her dissertation uses quantitative and qualitative methodologies to study the media's use of stereotypes in an era of post-political correctness. Specifically, Katie focuses on ironic humor that targets women, African Americans, gay individuals, and Arabs and measures the effect of these representations on prejudice toward these groups. She has published on the digital divide and reception of media from the Middle East.
