Anachronism 2011-2012

Welcome to "A Year of Anachronism"

The Department of Comparative Literature has designated 2011-2012 as our "Year of Anachronism."

During this theme year we will consider a broad range of questions. Aiming to rethink the claims of historicism and encourage thinking across time, we seek to bring together different departments and disciplines to reflect on time as a category for thought: religious time, secular time, archaeological time, geographical time, biological time, anthropological time, narrative time, the time of memory, periodization and periodicity, antiquity vs. modernity, the "pre" and the "post" modern, genealogy, chronology, synchronicity and non-synchronicity, the multiple temporalities of the present, and questions of futurity.

We invite faculty and students at the University of Michigan to submit proposals for funding activities on campus that are related to our theme year. We will also list undergraduate and graduate courses that focus on questions of time, and host a series of events related to our theme. Please contact Silke-Maria Weineck at smwei@umich.edu if you are interested in submitting a proposal.
