STUDENT PROFILES

Students admitted to Comparative Literature come from a wide variety of backgrounds that cannot be reduced to statistics, but a few statistics might help form an initial impression of the people doing graduate studies at Michigan. In any given year, 20% to 40% of our Ph.D.s come from nontraditional backgrounds. Our undergraduate majors have a similar profile.  We usually accept a number of students from abroad. In the last five years, more than 75% of our Ph.D.s have been women. Most, but not all, of our Ph.D.s go into university teaching. Two years after graduation, 56% of our graduates are in tenure-track positions. In the last five years, our graduating Ph.D.s have accepted tenure-track jobs at American University, Arizona State University, Cornell University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaigne, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Florida, Pennsylvania State University, Princeton University, and Williams College, among others. For a sample of profiles of current graduate students see the graduate student directory.
