Is a specialist in twentieth-century African American literature as well as the teaching of writing at the University of Michigan. Received his BFA in Painting and MA in English Literature (and Third World Literature) from Ohio University (Athens, OH). Also taught English and Afro-American Authors at Ohio University and subsequently at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Received his Doctor of Arts in English from the University of Michigan in 1984 and has been teaching English at the University of Michigan since 1978. His articles have appeared in the Journal of Popular Literature, the CLA Journal, Black American Literature Forum (now titled the African American Review) and The Black Scholar.
