  • About

    Professor Whatley has been on the economics faculty at the University of Michigan since 1981. In 1992 he also joined the faculty of the Center for Afro-American and African Studies. He received his PhD in economics from Stanford University in 1982 and he is known primarily for his research on the economic history of African American in the 20th century United States. He is currently researching the impact of the Atlantic slave trade on the development of African economies since 1450.

    Between 1992 and 1995 Professor Whatley was Associate Dean of the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies at the University of Michigan. He has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Economic History and Explorations in Economic History; on the American Economics Association's Committee on the Status of Minorities in the Profession; on the GRE Board of the Educational Testing Service; and on the Executive Board of the National Economics Association. He is the founder of CEDit, Inc., a nonprofit corporation that supports local efforts to develop capital in poor communities.
