Professor Brooks completed her doctorate in African American Studies and American Studies at Yale in 2001. She taught in the History Department at Berea College before accepting an Andrew W. Mellon Post-doctoral Fellowship in the Center for Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan in 2002. She has a book-in-progress.
