DAAS Opportunities

Du Bois-Mandela-Rodney Fellowship
A residential post-doctoral fellowship for scholars working on Africa and/or the African diaspora.

African Initiatives Fellowship Program
Fellowships for incoming U-M graduate students interested in African Studies. Must be submitted by a U-M department or unit.

African Initiatives Research Grant
Grants and fellowships for current U-M graduate students interested in African Studies. Must be recommended by a current U-M faculty member. Be aware that the application process for this grant has changed.

South Africa Initiatives Office
Grants to support current U-M students to travel, study and conduct research in Southern Africa and conversely to fund students from South African institutions to study and do research at the University of Michigan. Be aware that the application process for the SAIO Research Grant and Moody Fellowship has changed.

Outside Fellowships & Grants

Research funding for work in Africa comes mainly from the Fulbright Scholar Program, Social Science Research Council (SSRC), and the National Science Foundation.In addition, individual faculty members and students have recently held grants from the following foundations and organzations:
