About Martha J. Bailey

Martha Bailey will join the Department of Economics as an assistant professor in Fall 2007 after completing a postdoctoral fellowship in the Robert Wood Johnson Scholars in Health Policy Program at the University of Michigan School of Public Health.

Her research focuses on the interaction between technology, legislation and public policy in spurring the economic progress of women in the United States during the twentieth century. In recent papers, she examines the impact of oral contraception on women's labor market participation since 1960 as well as the sources of African-American women's wage gains in the 1940s. Currently, she is working on a project (with William Collins) that studies the effects of labor-saving, household technology on women's fertility and work.

During her tenure in the Robert Wood Johnson program, she plans to examine the effects of federally subsidized family planning programs on the fertility and health of low-income women.
