What is your application deadline date?

The deadline for the master’s degree program is January 15th.

Do you have rolling admissions?

Yes.

Do you accept students for the Winter term?

We only admit for Fall term.

What are your tuition rates?

How much is the application fee?

Do you offer funding for MAE students?

Although the Department of Economics is not currently offering funding for Master’s students, there are departments on campus who have identified potential funding opportunities. The Office of Financial Aid (link tohttp://www.finaid.umich.edu/Home.aspx) provides information regarding the cost of attendance and potential funding sources.Included on their site is a link to the Rackham Graduate School (link tohttp://www.rackham.umich.edu/) where you’ll find opportunities exclusively for graduate students.

How many students attend the Masters of Applied Economics program?

Approximately 100 students are currently enrolled in the program.

What are class sizes?

Master’s level Econ class sizes vary. Core courses may have approximately 70-80 students while non-core courses will have fewer students.

Admissions Criteria

Must applicants submit a GRE score report?

All applicants must submit a valid, official score report of the GRE; the GRE is valid for five years. The institution code for the University of Michigan is 1839. There is no department code. Do not send a paper copy of your score report; any received will be discarded.

How do you handle multiple GRE scores?

We accept the most recent score for application review.

What is the average GRE score of admitted students?

We place most emphasis on the quantitative portion of the GRE. Our admitted students score in and above the 80 percentile on the quantitative portion of the GRE.

Will you accept the GMAT in lieu of the GRE?

We will not accept substitutions. The GRE is required.

Must international applicants submit a TOEFL score report?

The TOEFL is valid for two years; Rackham Graduate School waives the TOEFL requirement for any applicant who is a non‐native English speaker who has earned a degree or will have earned a degree from an English‐speaking institution before entering our MAE program.

Is there a minimum GPA requirement?

While a minimum GPA is not required, approximately 98% of the applicants offered admission to the Rackham Graduate School have a greater than 2.80 (on a 4.00 scale) undergraduate grade point average.

Can I submit letters of recommendation online?

Yes. The process for submitting letters of recommendation is listed at http://www.rackham.umich.edu/admissions/getting_started/. Recommendation letters should be submitted by undergraduate teachers or others in a position to evaluate the applicants' potential for graduate study. Please do not send paper recommendations.

Is work experience a requirement for admission?

Although work experience is evaluated for admission, we do not have a work experience requirement.

How can I best prepare for applying to the MAE program?

It is recommended that you have intermediate micro- and macro-economics and a strong math/calculus background to be successful in the MAE program.

Do international applicants need to complete financial certification?

International students who are nominated for admission will be contacted by Rackham Graduate School to submit financial certification in order for the University of Michigan to prepare the I‐20. If you have been awarded financial aid by the University, the department will verify that information with Rackham Graduate School.
