Jan Kmenta received his B.Ec with First Class Honors from the University of Sydney, Australia in 1955 and graduated from Stanford University with a Ph.D. in Economics with a minor in Statistics in 1964. Since 1989 he also holds an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Saarland, Germany. He joined the University of Michigan as a Full Professor in 1973.
Professor Kmenta has published a number of articles in prominent economic and statistical journals, including Econometrica, Review of Economics and Statistics, International Economic Review, and Journal of the American Statistical Association.
His textbook, Elements of Econometrics, came out in two editions and was translated into several foreign languages. He was elected a Fellow of the American Statistical Association in 1970 and a Fellow of the Econometric Society in 1980.
Since the fall of communism in Europe in 1989 Professor Kmenta has been involved as a visiting professor at the Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education of Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. He spends the northern winters in Australia.
