Duties for .50 and .75 GSI positions include 1) leading two discussion sections, 2) grading assignments, 3) office hours, and 4) other duties as outlined on the fraction calculation form. Duties for .60 GSI positions include 1) leading one discussion section, 2) grading assignments, 3) office hours, and 4) other duties as outlined on the fraction calculation form.
No international students holding an F-1 or J-1 visa are eligible to be employed at a .60 or .75 GSI position. These visa holders are not permitted to be employed for more than 20 hours a week.
ULWR acronym: This is a course that has been approved by the
Selection criteria: Good standing as a doctoral student (as defined in the department’s “Rules and Regulations of the Economics doctoral program”) and satisfying all LS&A requirements for employment. No GSI position will be awarded to an applicant not enrolled in the doctoral program in economics until all qualified doctoral students in economics have been hired. All GSIs assigned in Fall term 2006, Winter term 2007, and Fall term 2007 in the economics department were economics doctoral students.
The Director of Graduate Studies in Economics awards all GSI positions based on the above criteria.
The deadline for submitting a GSI application for the Winter term 2008 is November 2. Selection decisions will be announced by mid-November.
To apply, active doctoral students in economics must submit a request for a Winter term 2008 GSI position to mbraun@umich.eduby the November 2 deadline. Any applicant who is not a doctoral student in economics must submit a resume, transcript of all economics coursework completed, and a reference letter from either a faculty member you have taught with previously or your current academic adviser if you have no previous teaching experience. These materials should be submitted as a hard copy to Mary Braun, Room 250 Lorch by the November 2 deadline.
