Giving Opportunities

The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) embraces education and research on all aspects of biodiversity, including the history of life on earth, the evolutionary mechanisms that generate diversity, the ecological context in which all life has evolved, and the consequences of interactions among organisms, including humans. Faculty expertise ranges from bacteria to mastodons, from the tropics to the tundra, from the theoretical to the practical. Our graduate programs in ecology and evolutionary biology offer a unique perspective among the life science units at the University of Michigan through our focus on a wide diversity of organisms and how they evolve and function in the complex environments of the natural world.

Rankings
Ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Michigan is among the top ten EEB departments in the country and our associated museums – Museum of Zoology and University Herbarium – are in the top three university collections nationwide. Our distinguished faculty include many of the best-known researchers in their fields and many hold positions as editors of prestigious journals and officers of national and international professional societies, and have received multiple honors and awards.

Funding priorities
1.The Frontiers Master’s Program in ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Michigan has three primary goals:
a) To attract a diverse student body to the study of ecology and evolution, particularly from underrepresented minorities and students from non-traditional backgrounds.
b) To give students opportunities to learn about the full range of subjects in ecology and evolution.
c) To prepare students to succeed in top-rated Ph.D. programs in ecology and evolution.

2. Graduate funding for fellowships and research support (especially travel)

WHAT'S NEW

David Bay Photography Fund
Established by Susan Campbell, David Bay's wife and former employee of the Biology Department in the 1980s. The David Bay Photography Fund will help pay for poster and photography printing for students presenting their research, and other graphic needs that may arise. Bay was EEB's and its predecessor department's "photographer-at-large" for over 34 years and was known and loved by many faculty, students and staff. Thanks to your donations, he will continue to support his favorite graduate students in a way that would make him smile.

We are currently over 40 percent of the way toward reaching our goal of making the David Bay Photography Fund an endowed fund at the $10,000 level so it can continue to help many future generations of graduate students in David’s memory.

All the world's a classroom
Sending students into the world

Undergraduates interested in experiencing first-hand other cultures, practicing language study in context, and learning from students and faculty in other nations will find few universities with as many choices as Michigan. LSA and a number of its many departments and programs provide opportunities to travel to over 35 countries. Every study abroad trip differs in its program and travel costs, but the average financial commitment required for most students is $5,000 per trip, a sizeable financial burden for many interested students. [The LSA undergraduate experience]

Student Global Initiative Fund
Perhaps most startling among the many facets of globalization is the sheer speed with which the world is changing. Today’s plans will be outdated or insufficient for tomorrow’s challenges, so LSA students must be flexible. Similarly, our programs must grow and adapt. In response to this demand, the college has created a central strategic fund for the distribution of resources to projects within LSA that address the current and ever-changing needs of our students. The fund merges named endowments and expendable gifts into a single source for student support, allowing LSA to leverage numerous gifts to fund the greatest number of students.

Contributing to this fund will be most effective through a 1:2 gift match for which President Coleman has allocated resources. Gifts must be endowments between $25,000 and $500,000 to qualify for the match. This presidential fund is limited and will be available only until depleted. Expendable contributions to the LSA Student Global Initiative Fund are welcome but not eligible for the match. Read more on the LSA Web site.
