Research interests

Evolution of early land plants: Develop computationally intense methods to test hypotheses of evolutionary relationships among early land plants using molecular data (with Yin-Long Qiu)

Ethnobotany: Apply ecological (as well as historical and anthropological) methods to the study of traditional
agriculture in Portugal (among other places)

Super trees: Develop efficient computer algorithms to construct super trees, especially motivated by pharmacogenomics
(with Davide Pisani)

Estimation of evolutionary rates: Develop computer algorithms to estimate evolutionary rates from DNA sequence, fossil, body size and thermal data; develop computationally intense methods to detect significantly different rates. (with T Dowling and G Smith)

Estimate age at death of human skeletal remains: Develop computer technology to compare observations of human skeletal remains with specimens in a large reference collection to create a computer "expert" that can estimate age at death. (with C. Risech)
